Is esports a bubble? Do brands understand esports? How can we trust viewer numbers?

These were some of the big questions that some experts of esports tried to answer, last Friday, where the third edition of the Dojo Esport event took place at the Hôtel de Ville (City hall) of Paris. Some of the best in the esports scene in France were present, as well as other actors that came from all over Europe to tackle the important questions in esports that many people are asking themselves right now (spoiler alert: 2019 looks as bright as ever for esports.)

Who are the social media winners of the Fortnite Pro-Am tournament?

Yesterday, the E3 expo closed with the Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am 2018 competition. The event paired 50 “pro” Fortnite players, streamers or entertainers into duos with 50 “amateurs”, mainly American celebrities. Epic Games chose the pro’s on the basis of their visibility on social media platforms around the world and added amateur celebrities who had shown an interest in Fortnite at some point. The expectations for this event were high, in terms of entertainment value and visibility. Three games after organizers gave $3 million in prize money to be split to the charity of the winners’ choices.

The 5 numbers you need to know about Fortnite

Fortnite: Battle Royale has taken the world by storm this year. It is a free-to-play battle royal game which was released on September 2017.  Within a few months, the game gained traction and became one of the most watched games on Twitch, beating League of Legends and on Youtube, beating Minecraft, which were in the lead until then.

The success of the game resides in its gameplay, for sure, but the wave of influencers and celebrities that streamed their games had a huge impact on it : Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Corentin “Gotaga” Houssein or even Drake (yes, I’m talking about the hip hop artist, not a gamer’s pseudonym)

As you may know, we’re fond of data at Digital Insighters. So we looked at stats on Fortnite. We saw some interesting data, but not everything was out there. So to obtain some of them, we collected Youtube data from January 2018 to today. You’ll find the result of our search in the infographics below.
